This week we will have our annual Missions Conference beginning on Wednesday night.  Our theme is “Go Reach Your World.”  This is our cause and God’s plan - to reach the world for Christ.  We have a tremendous group of missionaries and national pastors who will be with us.  It is our honor to have guests from St. Vincent, Kenya, Bahamas, India, Philippines, Thailand, Chile, Bolivia, Haiti, Grenada and Vietnam.  You will get a much better pulse for what is going on around the world.  Be sure to be here each night for the conference.  Begin now to pray for your Faith Promise Missions giving for the next year.
William Wilberforce, who led the abolition of slavery in England in the 1800’s, worked closely with a group of believers called the “Clapham Sect,” named for a neighborhood in south London.  In 1834, Katherine Hankey was born in Clapham, the daughter of a banker who was a leader in the “Clapham Sect.”  As a young girl, she taught Sunday School and organized a Bible Study for factory girls at the age of 18.  Kate got a heart for missions, especially Africa, and devoted her finances to reaching the lost around the world.
At the age of thirty-one, Kate became very sick and had to remain in bed for a full year.  During that year she wrote a poem entitled, “The Story Told.”  William Fischer put the music to it and published it in an American hymnbook in 1869.   It became one of D.L. Moody favorites.  Notice the first verse:

I love to tell the story of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory, Of Jesus and His love.
I love to tell the story Because I know ’tis true,
It satisfies my longings As nothing else can do.

Everyone is talking about the economic stimulus bill signed this week.  Not everyone, including this pastor, is excited about the plan.  Although there are multiple items I am in opposition, there is one in particular that you must know.  On page 164-165 of the bill there is a prohibition listed on the use of $3.5 billion set aside for renovating college and university facilities.  The bill says, “No funds awarded under this section may be used for modernization, renovation or repair of facilities used for sectarian instruction, religious worship or a school of or department of divinity.”  Sen. Jim DeMint (SC) caught this and put out an amendment to strike this which discriminates against students of faith.  Democrats voted down this measure (including Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida) 43-54.  This is  discrimination against those of faith.  DeMint said, “This is a direct attack on students of faith...This is now an ACLU stimulus designed to trigger lawsuits to intimidate religious organizations across the nation.  This language is so vague, it’s not clear if students can even pray in a dorm room renovated with this funding since it is a form of ‘religious worship’.”
How sad it is to see such utter disregard for those organizations on public campus that seek to reach students for Christ.  I believe this is just the start of a backlash against those of true faith in Christ.  According to Romans 13 the responsibility of government is to punish evil.  Romans 13:3 says, “For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil.”  You sure can hide a lot in “economic stimulus.”

What a great Winter Bible Conference we had this past week!  Dr. Barber delivered some truly powerful, Bible packed sermons to help us grow in the Lord.  Thank you for being here and being so supportive each night.  The Barbers continuously remarked about the spirit and the friendliness of the church.  Truly the Lord stirred our hearts and made us more like Christ.
Rev. Frederick Douglas is well-known in United States history.  Douglas lived in the 1800’s and was born a slave in Maryland.  Douglas educated himself and later educated other slaves by teaching them to read the New Testament.  Douglas escaped to freedom in 1838 and became well-known for his leading in the anti-slavery movement.  I want to share with you some words from Douglas I find so powerful:  “I have one great political idea...That idea is an old one.  It is widely and generally assented to; nevertheless, it is very generally trampled upon and disregarded.  The best expressions of it, I have found in the Bible.  It is in substance, “Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”  (Proverbs 14:34)  This constitutes my politics—the negative and positive of my politics, and the whole of my politics….I feel it my duty to do all in my power to infuse this idea into the public mind.”
Tonight we will have a special patriotic service with Andrew Phipps.  This will be a special time I do not want you to miss.  May God bless you today.
