    No, Freedom Isn’t Free
by:  CDR Kelly Strong, USCG (Ret.)

I watched the flag pass by one day.
    It fluttered in the breeze.
    A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
    Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
    How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
    How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
    No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of taps one night,
    When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
    And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
    That taps had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
    Of fathers, sons and husbands
    With interrupted lives.
    I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
    Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
    No, freedom isn't free.

    We sing:

    • Heavenly Sunlight and stay away from church when it’s hot.
    • Sweet Hour of Prayer and skip Prayer Meeting.
    • Onward Christian Soldiers and then go AWOL.
    • O For A Thousand Tongues and don’t use the one we have.
    • Blest Be The Tie That Binds then let little misunderstandings cut it.
    • We’re Marching To Zion and don’t even drive to Sunday School.
    • Throw Out The Lifeline and are content to throw out a fishing line.
    • I Love To Tell The Story and yet never tell it.
    • Lead Me To Calvary and ask directions to the ballpark.
    • Faith Is The Victory and depend on our feelings.
    • Make Me A Blessing and pray “Give me a blessing.”
    • Oh! To Be Like Thee and imitate the TV stars.
    • All That Thrills My Soul Is Jesus and seek worldly pleasures.
    • Jesus Loves The Little Children and refuse to teach a Sunday School class.
    • Burdens Are Lifted At Calvary and make an appointment with our therapist.
    • Oh Say, But I’m Glad! and walk around frowning.
    • A Mighty Fortress Is Our God and put our trust in our bank account.
    • When We All Get To Heaven and live as though we plan to stay on earth forever.

Let’s let our walk match our song.  I hope your have a wonderful Lord’s Day!

    My Mother's Bible

My mother's Bible is tattered and worn,
Many of its leaves are faded and torn.
Tear drops are mingled on many a page
With words that have comforted down through the age.

Dust never gathers on my mother's book.
When answers she's seeking, it's here she will look.
How often I see her with Bible in hand
Sifting its pages like soft desert sand.

The small bit of gold that glowed on the side,
Is dull from the thumbprints that open it wide.
My mother's Bible is black never more
But faded and tattered from use that it's bore.

My mother's Bible is valued, though old,
'Tis from it that all bedtime stories were told.
Oh, how we loved it when from it she read
And then she would kiss us and tuck us in bed.

The memories are golden...the ones that I hold,
Of my mother's Bible and wisdom it told.
Oft times I saw her kneeling in prayer
And always beside her...the Bible was there.

Paul told Timothy, “Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an example of the believers in word, in conversation, in charity,  in   spirit,  in  faith,  in  purity.”  (I Timothy 4:12).  The testimony of a teenager for Christ ought to be powerful and clear.  At Bible Baptist Church we strive to encourage our teens to shine for the Lord Jesus Christ.  Truly, I am thankful for each of our teenagers here in our church.  These teens are vital to our church.  Each week you will find them singing, serving and soulwinning.  Now if you want me to say that they are perfect, I cannot say that.  There  are  times  when  we  have  to  step  in  with  correction  and edification for a change to be made.  However, I find that they usually respond in a positive way.  Be sure to pray for them, encourage them, and be a good example to them.  Today our teens will be doing some special things which will help you better understand what is going on around here with their great group.  Thank you for your continual support of all the efforts to grow these young champions for Christ.Be sure to check out all the good materials in the bookstore.  We have added a new rack of inexpensive pamphlets which cover a wide variety of subjects.  There are great personally or as a help to others. You will also find an assortment of boxed cards for all different occasions.  Keep checking by there often so that you may see the changing inventory of good items. One last note - the directories are here and available for pick–up for all that had a picture taken.  Just go to the lobby at the special table and see the ladies.  They will assist you in getting your copy.  Extra copies will be available for $5 in the bookstore in just a couple of weeks.  Let me thank Joy Bruce and all the helpers who worked so hard on this.  Enjoy it!

It is a honor to have Geraldine Ragan and Ricky here with us today.  As a teenager I first saw Geraldine and Ricky in action and still to this day I remember the humor and laughs around them.  Geraldine has used her tremendous talent from God to reach many people for Christ.  Geraldine will bless your heart and you will never forget her and Ricky.  Please welcome her here with us today.

Remember that this coming Saturday is our Annual Bible Baptist Church Golf Tournament.  I would love to see a great number of golfers here for this event.  Invite others to play with you.  All the money raised goes towards the Teen Missions Trip.  We will have prizes, giveaways,  great  fellowship  and  good  food.  Go  by  the Welcome Center today and sign-up to be part of this.  We will have a fun afternoon.

I was reading II Corinthians 12 this week and came across verse 10 which states, “Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”  Let me take a moment and help you with this list of items which you and I are to take pleasure in:

    1. “Infirmities” -The weaknesses I have.
    2. “Reproaches” -The insults I face.
    3. “Necessities” -The hardships I endure.
    4. “Persecutions” -The burden I must bear.
    5. “Distresses” -The perplexities I do not understand.

The glory and pleasure from such matters is that of showing my physical weakness and frailty, but also my Saviour’s ability to overcome such things by His strength.  God’s strength is never measured by human terms but rather it is “made perfect in weakness” (v. 9).  Whenever you hear me say, “die to self” this is what I am asking us to do.  Thank God for His strength, power and might for our infirmities, reproaches, necessities, persecutions, and distresses.  To God be the glory for the great things He has done and is doing.
