    David, Nabal, & Abigail                      1 Samuel 25:2-13 
    ·        Anger is One of the Reckless Emotions
    ·        It is Unpredictable
    ·        It is So Public
    ·        David, Who Showed Remarkable Patience, Loses Control
    ·        Background
    ·        Saul Was Still King & Official Protection Came Through His Army
    ·        David Was Protecting the Southern Region From Raids of Enemies
    ·        Common Custom At Shearing Time Was to Receive a Portion
    ·        A man in Maon-Descended From Maon
    ·        Possessions were in Carmel-His Business Was in a Small Town North of Maon
    ·        The man was very great-Because of Material Possessions
    ·        This is the Poorest Kind of Greatness
    ·        God Takes Notice of Who We Are in Character (Lk 1:5)
    ·        He was shearing his sheep-Harvest & A Time of Gladness & Hospitality
    ·        Nabal-Means: Fool (Ps 14:1)
    ·        Abigail-Means: My Father is Joy
    ·        A woman of good understanding-Wisdom & Discernment
    ·        A Woman of a beautiful countenance-Outward & Inward Beauty
    ·        The man was churlish-Stubborn & Harsh
    ·        Evil in his doings-Dishonest
    ·        The house of Caleb-Either a Descendent of Caleb or Doglike
    ·        David heard …Nabal did shear his sheep-Payday for Services Rendered
    ·        David sent out-Didn’t Go Himself to Nabal
    ·        Ten young men-Expectation of a Gift of Food
    ·        That liveth…Peace (Shalom)-Life & Peace; A Familiar Greeting
    ·        We hurt them not-Protected Them
    ·        Ask thy young men-Check My Deeds With Your Shepherds
    ·        We come in a good day-Festive Day
    ·        Whatsoever cometh to thine hand-We Will Gladly Take Whatever You Send
    ·        To thy son David- A Title Showing Reverence From Younger to Older
    ·        They spake…and ceased-Delivered the Greeting & Rested
    ·        And Nabal answered-In An Insulting Way
    ·        Who is David?-Pretended Ignorance
    ·        Servants…break away…from his master-Discredit His Accomplishments
    ·        Take my bread…give unto men-Accused David of Being a Rebel
    ·        Two Conflicts
    ·        Husband & Wife
    ·        Employer & Employee
    ·        Told him all those sayings-Not a Good Report
    ·        David’s Anger Got the Best of Him
    ·        Nabal Was Ungrateful & Selfish, But Those Are Not Capital Crimes
    ·        Gird ye on every man his sword-An Over-Reaction
    ·        Four hundred men-That Should Handle Nabal !!
    ·        God’s Servants Need to Be On Guard At All Times (1 Peter 5:8)

    Saul Answers David; Samuel Dies                 1 Samuel 24:16-22; 25:1 
    ·        Is this thy voice, my son David?-Seeking Confirmation Due to Astonishment
    ·        And Saul…wept-Real Expression at the Sight of His Own Sins
    ·        Three Possible Levels of Life:
    ·        The Divine Level, Where We Return Good for Evil
    ·        The Human Level, Where We Return Good for Good & Evil for Evil
    ·        The Demonic Level, Where We Return Evil for Good
    ·        Saul Admitted That David Operated on the Divine Level
    ·        This Confession Was Enough to Prove David Innocent
    ·        Saul Was Not Repentant
    ·        What Should Saul Have Said?
    ·        You Are Righteous, But I Am Wicked
    ·        Dealt well with me-Saul Admits & Recalls His Suspicions
    ·        LORD had delivered me-Shut Me Up
    ·        David’s Actions Toward Saul Defied Military Logic
    ·        David’s Actions Defied Common Sense
    ·        Let him go well away-Get Away Unharmed or In Peace
    ·        LORD reward thee good-Saul Turns David Over to God for His Pay
    ·        I know-Understand; to Comprehend a Situation Through Observation
    ·        Thou shalt surely be king-Open Confession
    ·        Kingdom…be established-Consolidate the Nation
    ·        Swear now-The Language of Oaths
    ·        Thou wilt not cut off my seed-Saul’s Major Concern Was His Own Name, Not the Spiritual Welfare of the People
    ·        David swore unto Saul-No Need for Bloody Methods
    ·        And Saul went home-His Heart Would Not Let Him Destroy David As He Designed
    ·        David…up unto the hold-He Knew Saul Too Well to Trust Him (Matt 10:16)
    ·        And Samuel died-Bible Emphasis on God, Not the Man
    ·        All the Israelites were gathered-The Tribal Leaders
    ·        Lamented him-Honor in Death, but Incomplete Obedience in Life (Matt 23:29-31)
    ·        Buried him in his house at Ramah-Humble Request
    ·        David…went down to the wilderness-Didn’t Attend the Funeral

    David Spares Saul’s Life           1 Samuel 24:1-15 
    ·        The wilderness of En-gedi-Oasis on the Shore of the  Dead Sea
    ·        Chosen-Hand Picked Warriors
    ·        Went to seek David-Philistine Skirmish Over, Saul is Right Back to the Hunt
    ·        The rocks of the wild goats-And Ibex Still Roam There Today
    ·        Sheepcotes-Piled Stones Into a Circular Wall
    ·        Went in to cover his feet-Two Meanings: Nap or Bathroom Break (Judges 3:24)
    ·        David and his men-Those With Him; Maybe Others in Nearby Cave
    ·        Remained in the sides of the cave-Inward Parts of the Cave
    ·        Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee-The Men Say it is a Fulfillment of God’s Promise
    ·        But When Did God Say This?-He Didn’t
    ·        I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand-David Never Considered Saul His Enemy
    ·        Do to him as it shall seem good unto thee-No One Has License to Do As They Wish
    ·        The Law Says, Thou shalt not kill (murder) Ex 20:13
    ·        David Saw the Occasion As An Opportunity to Show Mercy & Prove That His Heart Was Right
    ·        Cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe privily-Cut off a corner of the Hem of the Robe Stealthily
    ·        To Refute the Suspicion That He Was Lying in Wait to Murder Saul
    ·        Heart smote him-Sin Sensitive
    ·        He is the anointed of the LORD-No Jew Had the Right to Attack Him
    ·        The Jews Were Not Even to Curse Their Rulers (Ex 22:28)
    ·        So David stayed his servants-The Verb Means to Crush Down
    ·        My lord the king-Acknowledged Saul’s Lawful Authority & His Allegiance
    ·        David Told Saul First (Matt 18:15)
    ·        Hearest thou men’s words-Don’t Believe Everything You Hear
    ·        Some bade me kill thee-Compare Your Actions for Consistency with the Word
    ·        My father-Title of Respect; Inferior to Superior
    ·        Even If You Can’t Respect the Man in Office, You Must Respect the Office (Rom 13:1-7; 1 Peter 2:13-17)
    ·        See the skirt of thy robe in my hand-Opening Argument & Evidence
    ·        Killed thee not-I Had Opportunity, But Refused to Take It
    ·        I have not sinned against thee-Not Guilty
    ·        Thou huntest my soul to take it-Like A Hunter Pursues Game to Kill it
    ·        The LORD judge…avenge me-I Leave My Fate in the Hand of the LORD
    ·        Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked-Character is Revealed by Conduct
    ·        After a dead dog, after a flea-Why is the King Wasting His Time With Me
    ·        Plead my cause-God is the Righteous Judge & Our Advocate (Ps 35:1 & 1 Pet 2:23)
    ·        What Can We Learn From This?
    ·        Respect the Position Regardless of the Person
    ·        Make Decisons Based on Principle Not Expediency (Prov 6:32)
    ·        Get Victory Over Impatience
