    The Last Fatal Step to the Throne                 2 Samuel 4:1-12 & 5:1-5 
    ¡    All the Israelites were troubled-Caused Rather By Uncertainty Than By Fear
    ¡    Two men that were captains of bands-Men of Importance With Ishbosheth
    ¡    Baanah-Means Son of Affliction
    ¡    Rehab-Means Horseman or Chariot
    ¡    Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son-Saul’s Lineage Virtually Became Extinct on Ishbosheth’s Death
    ¡    The heat of the day…who lay on a bed-Custom in Hot Climates
    ¡    As though they would have fetched wheat-How They Gained Entrance to the Royal Residence Unhindered
    ¡    Slew him, and beheaded him-Produced Certain Death and Proof
    ¡    Ishbosheth’s Only Crime-He Was The Son of Saul
    ¡    Behold the head of Ishbosheth-Presented It With Pride
    ¡    The LORD hath avenged my lord-Thought They Were Doing the LORD’S Work
    ¡    This day of Saul and of his seed-I Can See the Reward Now!
    ¡    LORD…redeemed my soul out of all adversity-I Don’t Need Human Help to Further My Career

    ¡    Cut off their hands and their feet-In the Eastern Mind, The Offending Parts (Deut 21:23)
    ¡    The Believer is Not to Rejoice in the Calamity of An Enemy (Prov 24:17)

    ¡    Then came all the tribes of Israel-After 5 Years of Preparation
    ¡    The Assembly Probably Numbered 348,222 (1 Chron 12:23-40)
    ¡    King by Free Choice or Election of the Tribes
    ¡    Three Reasons for David’s Election:
    ¡    Thy bone and thy flesh-Common Ancestor
    ¡    Thou wast he that leddest out-He Was the Actual Leader in War Even in Saul’s Time

    o    Family of David
    o    Long war-7 Years Even Though Ishbosheth Only Ruled For 2 Years
    o    David Was Not a Father Until Age 30
    o    Amnon Brought Shame on the Family
    o    Chileab Disappears After Birth
    o    Absalom Probably the Worst; Tried to Steal the Throne
    o    Adonijah Also Attempted to Steal the Throne
    o    Shephatiah & Ithream Disappear After Birth
    o    David Had 6 Children by 6 Different Wives in Hebron
    o    David Had Many Unnamed Wives & 14 More Children in Jerusalem
    o    This Summary Excludes Concubines & Their Offspring
    o    The Sin of Polygamy Was Against God’s Word (Deut 17:15-20)
    o    The Lord Jesus, As King, Has Only One Wife-The Church 
    o    Fall of Abner
    o    The Argument
    o    Abner made himself strong-Held the Throne of Isbosheth Together
    o    Gone in unto my father’s concubine?-Harem of A Deceased King Was the Inheritance of His Successor
    o    Abner very wroth-Because the King Wanted to Degrade & Strip Him of His Office
    o    Am I a dog’s head?-Worthless & A Traitor
    o    Not delivered thee…thou chargest me-I Maintain You As King & You Want to Punish Me!

    o    Abner had communication with the elders of Israel-Testing the Wind 
    o    The Assassination
    o    Joab came from pursuing a troop-David Sent Him on a Raid
    o    What hast thou done?-Are You Trying to Get Rid of Me?
    o    He came to deceive thee-Abner is Just a Spy
    o    Joab…sent messengers after Abner-In David’s Name
    o    Smote him there…for the blood of Asahel his brother-Revenge in the Gate 
    o    Fast of David
    o    I and my kingdom are guiltless-Abner’s Murder Was a Private Crime
    o    Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner-Premeditated
    o    David said to Joab and to all the people-Self-Condemned by Participation in the Funeral
    o    Thy hands were not bound-No Legal Process
    o    As a man falleth before wicked men-By Crime Not By Law
    o    The people came to cause David to eat meat-Custom After a Funeral (Jer. 16:7)
    o    All Israel Understood-Eventually, Beginning With the Witness of the 20
    o    This day weak-A Newly Anointed King
    o    The LORD shall reward the doer of evil-A Curse Leaving the Matter to God

    King of Judah                                     2 Samuel 2:1-32 
    o    The Ceremony
    o    His Crowning
    o    David enquired of the LORD- A Renewed Habit
    o    Whither shall I go up?-God Calls to Specific Places
    o    Unto Hebron-Important City & David Owned Property There
    o    Where God Leads, God Feeds
    o    And the men of Judah came-David Waited for the People to Take the Initiative
    o    Anointed David king over the house of Judah-Second Anointing Limited to His Tribe
    o    First Anointing Gave Sacredness, Second Gave Authority
    o    They dwelt in the cities of Hebron-Suffered With David, Now Reign with David (2 Tim 2:12)
    o    His Commendation
    o    Shewed this kindness (hesed)-Loving Loyalty (Ex 34:6)
    o    Hands be strengthened…Saul is dead-Move Beyond Your Grief
    o    Judah have anointed me king over them-David Would Be Their King, If They Wanted
    o    The Competition
    o    But Abner-Saul’s Cousin & Commander of the Army
    o    Ishbosheth-Means, Man of Shame
    o    Made him king over all Israel-Abner Supported the Child of His King
    o    What Was David’s Reaction?-He Did Nothing
    o    Mahanaim-Levite Town Meaning, Two Hosts (Josh 21:38)
    o    The Contest
    o    Abner…went out-The Aggressor
    o    And Joab the son of Zeruiah-David’s Sister, the Spitfire
    o    The pool of Gibeon-A Place Midway Between Mahanaim & Hebron
    o    Let the younger men now arise-Designed to Erase the Mutual Unwillingness to Fight with Brethren
    o    And play before us-Sport for us
    o    Every one…fell down together-Mass Murder
    o    Helkathhazzurim-The Field of Flints or Sharp Knives
    o    Abner was beaten-Joab Lost 19; Abner Lost 360  
    o    The Chase
    o    Asahel pursued after Abner-Fast of Foot, But Slow of Head
    o    Turn thee aside from following me-Abner Knew It Was A Mismatch
    o    How then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?-Joab Would Have Duty as the Avenger of Blood
    o    Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him-Defensive Posture Turns to Death Blow
    o    As many as came to the place…stood still-Pursuit Ceased At the Corpse
    o    The Compromise
    o    Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner-Determined for Revenge
    o    Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner-Favoritism & Family
    o    Shall the sword devour for ever?-When Will the Blood Feud End?
    o    Unless thou hadst spoken-It’s All Your Fault!
    o    Joab blew a trumpet-Signal to Stop
    o    And Abner (and Joab) and his men walked all that night-Both Armies Returned Home

    David Hears of Saul’s Death                         2 Samuel 1:1-16 
             The Monarchy Years (1010-970 B.C.) or 40 Years
             Difficult Circumstances When David Took Over
             It Will Take 7 Years To Unite Israel Under His Rule
             David Reorganized the Priesthood & It Flourished
             David Upgraded the Levitical Choir
             He Ruled in the Golden Age of Israel
             Now it came to pass-Many Events in a Few Days
             After the death of Saul-First King Over All Israel
             When David was returned from-At the Same Time as the Philistine Battle
             David had abode two days in Ziklag-Restoring Order & Providing Temporary Shelter
             A man came-The Suspense Was Broken
             Out of the camp from Saul-Probably Not a Soldier
             Clothes rent, and earth upon his head-Outward Signs of Grief
             Israel in Retreat; Saul & Jonathan Were Slain (1Sam 31:9-10)
             How knowest thou-David Inquires Further Before Accepting the News
             As I happened by chance-I Was An Eyewitness
             He Confirmed With 3 Forms of Evidence:
             Behold, Saul-The Report of Personal Sighting
             Saul leaned upon his spear-Inseparable From the Spear
             The chariots and horsemen-David Well Aware of Philistine Armaments
             And he said unto me-The Report of A Conversation With the King
             Who art thou?-Saul Inquired About the Identity of the Young Man
             Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me-Ordered the Amalekite to Kill Him
             So, I…slew him-Became the First Foreigner to Slay an Anointed Israelite
             Some Irony
             Saul Lost His Kingship Because He Failed to Kill an Amalekite King (1 Sam 15:9)
             I took the crown…and the bracelet-Tokens From the King’s Own Person 
             Two Different Accounts of Saul’s Death (1 Sam 31:4-5, 1 Chron 10:4-5)
             The Amalekite Told the Truth & is Adding Details Not in 1 Sam 31.
             The Amalekite Lied About the Conversation & Killing (1 Chron 10:13)
             David Did Not Question the Truth of the Account
             They mourned, and wept, and fasted-No Rejoicing, Only Grief
             Whence art thou?-Confirming the Man’s Nationality
             Not afraid to stretch forth thine hand-Since David Was Afraid
             Fall upon him-David Was Obedient to Scripture (Ex 17:15-16; Deut 25:17-19)
             He smote him that he died-Scriptural Treatment (Ex 21:23-25)
             Thy blood be upon thy head-Not The Expected Reward
