  • Parables

    Introduction
            What Are Parables?
            Parables Are Figures of Speech
The Word Parable Means “To Throw Alongside
            Parables Communicate Abstract Ideas
Parables Transfer Ideas From the Known to the Unknown
Parables Always Transfer from Reality & Never the Reverse
To Transfer from Unknown to Unknown is Called Allegory
The Word Parable Is Used of Different Figures of Speech:
            Simile-Means Likeness (Matt 10:16)
            Metaphor-Means Implied Likeness (Jn 10:7)
Similitude-Means What is Generally Done  (Matt 13:33)
Story-Means What One Specific Person Did (Lk 15:11)
            Christ’s Use of Parables
Parables Are Approx. One Third of Christ’s Teaching in the Gospels
            Why Did Christ Use Parables?
To Reveal Truth to Some, But Hide it From Others (Matt 13:10-17)
Physical Equipment (Eyes & Ears) Not Enough
A Mixed Audience Listened; Impossible to Segregate the Two Groups
            Christ Wanted to Instruct Believers
Believers Have Heart Ears & Eyes (Lk 8:8)
Christ Did Not Want to Add More Responsibility to Unbelievers By Giving Them More Truth (Lk 12:48)
A Turning Point in Christ’s Ministry is the Miracle of the Demon-possessed, Blind Mute (Matt 12)
They Rejected Christ as Messiah (Matt 12:30)
The Davidic Kingdom Would Be Postponed for the Age of the Gentiles
The Majority of the Parables Were Spoken From This Point Onward
            Interpretation of the Parables
The Parables Were Designed to Deliver Truth to Believers
Jesus Expected Believers to Understand the Parables
Only Two Parables Were Interpreted by Christ
Christ Interpreted These Two to Set a Pattern of Interpretation
            Principles of Interpretation:
First, the Parables Concerned the kingdom of heaven
Is There a Distinction Between kingdom of heaven and kingdom of God ? (Matt 19:23)
Both Terms Speak of the Source
            Some See a Distinction:
The “kingdom of God” Never Includes Unsaved People
The “kingdom of heaven” Includes Both Saved & Professing Christians (Mt 13)
We See the Kingdom in Three Aspects:
The Kingdom as a Divine Source
The Kingdom as a Church Founded on the Word of God
The Kingdom as Described By its Members in Their Conduct, Walk and Destiny
Second, We Must Observe the Immediate Context
Each Parable Was Designed to Solve a Problem or Answer a Question
Third, the Main Point Must Be Determined
Fourth, The Process of the Parable Must Be Studied
We Cannot Take Our Culture and Impose That Into Bible Times
How Will We Study the Parables of Jesus
            Parables of the Early Ministry
            Parables of the Later Ministry
            Parables of the Passion Week
