    —  The Setting
    —  In the Same Place as the Parable of the Sower, Seed, & Soils
    —  put he forth-The Phrase is Used of Setting Food Before Someone
    —  This Parable Presents the Problem of Evil, Not the Hearts of the Hearers

    —  What’s Different Between This Parable and the Sower, Seed & Soils?
    —  Soils Had One Class of Sowers, One Kind of Seed & 4 Results
    —  This Parable Has Two Sowers, Kinds of Seed, & Harvests

    —  But while men slept-Working Secretly
    —  his enemy came and sowed (25)… is the devil (39)-Satan, the Wicked One
    —  The Two Seeds (verse 38)

  • Parables of Jesus Wk5

    Two Debtors                                    Luke 7:36-50
            The Setting
desired him that he would eat with him -Christ Invited to Dinner with a Pharisee
he went into …and sat down to meat- Shows an Attitude of Poor Hospitality
stood at his feet-As They Ate, A Woman With a Sinful Life Entered
            How Could This happen?
Not Unusual in a Culture Where Hospitality Was Prized
The Table Was Likely Set in an Open Courtyard & the Door Left Open
The Customs of the Day Made it Possible for Her to Enter
behind him-The Table Was Low and the Guests Reclined
The Woman Brought With Her an alabaster Jar of Perfume
The Woman Showed the Attitude of Her Heart By Standing at Jesus Feet
wash his feet with tears –Means literally, to Water With a Shower
This Was Her Way of Telling Jesus that She Had Repented
did wipe them with the hairs of her head-Something the Slave Women Did to Their Masters
and kissed his feet-The Word Means: To Kiss Fondly or To Caress Continuously
Where There is Much Forgiveness, There is Much Love
anointed them with the ointment-Not Common Olive Oil; Adoration
known who and what manner of woman-The Pharisee was Shocked by the  Actions of This Sinner and Christ’s Attitude
            The Problem
According to Pharisees Tradition, Jesus Was Ceremonially Defiled
If Jesus Was Who He Claimed to Be, Why Did He Accept the Woman’s Gift and Adoration?
            The Solution
I have somewhat to say unto thee-If Simon Only Knew
a certain creditor –Money Lending, Just as Common Then as Now
which had two debtors -Two Men in Debt to the Same Man
the one owed five hundred pence-Two Years of Wages
the other fifty-Two Months of Wages
nothing to pay… forgave them both-Both Unable to Repay, Had Their Debt Cancelled-All of Grace
which of them will love him most?-Greatest Debt Would Show Greatest Devotion
            The Comparisons
The Pharisee Invited Christ to Observe Him, Not to Honor Him
Christ Was Not Shown the Customary Hospitality
            No Foot Washing
            No Greeting With A Kiss
            No Vial of Oil
A Woman Had Provided What the Pharisee Neglected
Why Didn’t Simon Extend the Courtesies?-Lack of Faith in the Person of Christ
            The Result
Thy sins are forgiven-Rewarded for Her Faith, Not Her Works
Who is this that forgiveth sins also?-Only God Can
            go in peace-Double Blessing

  • Parables of Jesus Wk4

Sower, Seed & Soils (Part B)                                Matt 13:3-23
            The Field or Soils
The Soils Are Those Who Heard the Word of God
This is Fundamental Truth of How Sinners React to the Gospel
Fruit is the Outward Test of True Salvation (Matt. 7:16)
What are Some of These Fruits?
            Christian Character (Gal. 5:22–23)
            Good Works (Col. 1:10),
Winning Others to Christ (Rom. 1:13),
Sharing What We Have (Rom. 15:25–28)
            Praising God (Heb. 13:15)
It is Possible to Believe with the Mind & Yet Not Be Saved (John 2:23–25)
Unless There is Fruit in the Life, There is Not Saving Faith in the Heart
The Soil or the Different Hearers
            The Wayside Hearer
The Hearer With the Closed Mind & Heart
Receives the Seed by the Ear, But No Life
The Seed is ON the Surface, But Not IN
Spiritually Hardened and Does Not Understand
Truth is Unable to Penetrate Activity and Thoughtlessness in the Life
fowls came and devoured-Easy Picking for “Birds” from the Wicked One
            The Truth Takes No Hold
            The Stony Ground Hearer
The Hearer With the Emotional Mind & Heart
Received, but Does Not Take Root
The Seed Is ON, IN, But Not Down
Easily Excited, Enthusiastic, But Faith is Temporary
When Tribulation & Persecution Arise, They Quickly Fall Away
Depth of Faith, Surrender & Character are Lacking
This is A Professor, But Not A Possessor
            The Thorny Ground Hearer
The Hearer With the Worldly Agenda
The Seed is ON, IN, DOWN, But Does Not Come UP With Fruit
This is A Carnal Christian (1 Cor 3:1-3)
The Fruit is Choked by Opposition Forces Which are Allowed to Co-Exist
            The Cares of This World-Worldliness
The Deceitfulness of Riches-Seeking Wealth for Happiness
            The Lusts of Other Things
            The Good Ground Hearer
The Hearer With the Steadfast Understanding Mind & Heart
The Seed is ON, IN, DOWN & UP
The Word is Received, Understood & Yielded to in Faith
This Produces Service Glorifying to Christ & Beneficial to Others
How Do We Fit These 4 Categories Into the 2 Categories of Individuals?
The First 2 Kinds of Soil Are Inadequate or Unsaved
Not True Believers, Despite Certain Outward Appearances
The Last Two Soils Are Adequate or Saved
For Farmers, Only Those Plants That bear good fruit Count for Anything
The Thorny or Carnal Believers Are True Plants, But Limited Growth & No Fruit
Only The Good Soil Produced Proper Spiritual Fruit (7:16–17)
What Counts is Not Profession of Faith, But Possession & Fruit-bearing
            The Different Degrees of Fruitfulness
Seed (Word) Bears Fruit As It is Allowed to Possess the Soil (Good Heart) Lk 8:15
The Fruits of Grace Are of the Same Quality, But Not the Same Quantity
Thirty Fold is Designed to Express the Lowest Degree of Fruitfulness
Sixty Expresses an Intermediate degree of Fruitfulness
An Hundredfold the Highest Degree of Fruitfulness

At the time of Christ, Pharisees Fasted Twice a Week
Fasting Degenerated Among the Pharisees to an External Observance Used to Impress Others
The Practice of Fasting Was Adopted by the disciples of John
The Reason, However, Was a Confession of Their Need of Cleansing
they said unto him-The Pharisees & Disciples of John Unite on This Occasion
but thine eat and drink?-Disturbing to Those Who Lived Withdrawn Lives & Fasted Regularly
            The Problem
The Pharisees Observed Christ & the Disciples For Conformity to Their Traditions
The Disciples of John Also Observed Differences in Lifestyle
Both Had Not Observed Christ or the Disciples Fasting Regularly
Early Church Fasting Limited to Special Occasions (Acts 13:2-3; 14:23)
Even When the Early Church Fasted, Sorrow Was Not Present (Matt 6:12-18)
They Both Knew the Relationship Between John the Baptist & Jesus
Since John Fasted Regularly, They Challenged Jesus Why He Did Not
            The Explanation
In Answering Both, Christ Began With the Figure of a Marriage Feast
Jewish Weddings Lasted a Week and Were Times of Great Joy and Celebration
make the children of the bridechamber fast-Out of Place During Rejoicing
Christ Pictured Himself as the Bridegroom & The Believers as the Guests (Jn 3:29)
Christ Was Inviting Them to Share in His Joy
But the days will come-In the Immediate Future
when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them-The Crucifixion & Ascension
then shall they fast in those days-The Time Between Arrest and Resurrection
            Understanding The Processes Used
No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old
The Parable  Begins with an Old Worn Out Garment
Patching is Possible to Extend Use For a Short Time
new maketh a rent -No One Would Cut the Patch From a New Garment
taken out of the new agreeth not with the old-The Patch Cloth Was Not Pre-Shrunk
And no man putteth new wine into old bottles
Bottles (askos)-Narrow-Necked Goat or Sheep Skins
new wine will burst the bottles-Through Expansion Caused by Fermentation
the bottles shall perish-Both Wine & Skin Destroyed
            Interpretation
The Old System (Judaism) Taught by the Pharisees Was Being Replaced by the New (Gospel of Grace)
It Was Impossible to Patch it Up & Continue to Use it
The Garment Represents the Outward Life and Conversation
Christ Did not Come to Fix the Traditions
Any Attempt to Put the New System on Top of the Old Would Destroy Both
Christ Was Also Making a Clear Distinction Between Law & Grace (Matt 5:20 & 2 Cor 5:17)
The New Wine Represents the Teaching of Jesus
The Old Wine Skins the Traditions of Men
The Wine Represents the Inward Aspect of Life
To Entrust New Doctrine to Closed Minds Hampers Acceptance (Acts 2:13)
New Vessels Are Those That Believe by Faith
            Anticipation
Christ Knew What the Pharisees Were Thinking
drunk old wine straightway desireth new-Content With the Old
These Parables Show the Fixed Gap Between Law and Grace
