The Salt & Its Savor                                                Matt 5:13
    ¡  Setting
¡  Spoken by Jesus After the Beatitudes; A Hillside by the Sea of Galilee
¡  The Parable Deals With Christian Witness & Influence
    ¡  The Elements
¡  salt-We Think of This Element For Its Taste
¡  Salt Was Used Primarily, in Ancient Times, as A Preservative
    ¡  Salt is Not Antiseptic
¡  Salt Does Not Cure Corruption, it Prevents it’s Spread
¡  salt have lost his savor-Loses Its Saltiness or Becomes Tasteless
¡  have lost his savor (mōranthē) –More Common Meaning is To Make or Become Foolish (Rom 1:22 & 1Cor 1:20)
¡  wherewith shall it be salted-Restored To Its Original Condition
¡  cast out… trodden under foot-Used for Foot Path Material
    ¡  Interpretation
¡  Salt-Christians, Those Saved by Grace Through Faith Alone
¡  of the earth-The Mission Field is the World
¡  Two Observations About the World:
¡  The World is Progressively Advancing Into Corruption
¡  The World is Worth Preserving, Otherwise Why Salt It?
¡  As Salt, We Are to Be a Moral & Spiritual Preventative to the Spread of Sin’s Corruptive Influence
¡  lost his savor -We Must Not Compromise & Permit or Add to the Unsavory Conditions Around Us (Col 4:6)
¡  Saints Cannot Lose Their Souls, But They Can Lose Their Saltiness
¡  To be cast out and trodden- Has Nothing To Do With Eternal Security
¡  This Phrase Refers to the World’s Response to Christians Who Do Not Function As They Should
¡  When Christians Are Removed by Rapture, the Effects of Evil Will Be Unchecked
¡  Christians Can Only Be Effective If We Maintain Our Testimonies

  • The Treasure & Field Wk10

The Treasure & The Field                                      Matt 13:44
    }  The Setting
}  In the House, the Multitude Sent Away (Outside World) (Matt 13:36)
}  He Speaks to Men of Faith Not Men of Sight
}  Instead of Continuing to Explain the Course of the Church Age, Jesus Turns to Explain the Worth of the Kingdom of God
}  This Parable is Generally Interpreted By Two Viewpoints:
    }  The Human Viewpoint
}  The Sinner Finds Christ (The Treasure) in the Field (Scriptures) and Gives Up All That He Possesses to Gain Him and Be Saved
}  This Interpretation Presents Several Problems:
}  Jesus Christ is Not a Hidden Treasure
}  No Sinner Could Ever purchase Salvation!
}  If the Sinner Could, Would He Hide Christ Again?
}  This Method Shows Entrance to the Kingdom is By Our Own Efforts
}  The Human Viewpoint, Most Common, Could Not Be the Interpretation
    }  The Divine Viewpoint
}  Why? Because Entrance into the kingdom of heaven is Spiritually Granted
    }  The Elements
    }  The Field
}  in a field-That Which Contains the Treasure; Probably the World
    }  The Man
    }  a man-Christ Himself
    }  The Hiding
    }  hid in a field-Not An Accident
}  hath found, he hideth-Secure Against Another Taking it
}  and for joy thereof-Or In His Joy
    }  The Purchase
}  goeth and selleth … and buyeth-In Agreement with Jewish Law
    }  buyeth that field-The Work on the Cross (1 Jn 2:2 & 2 Cor 5:19)
    }  The Treasure
}  Interpretation #1: the Treasure is Israel
}  Spoken of as God’s Peculiar Treasure &  Special People  (Ex 19:5 & Deut 7:6)
}  That Nation Was Placed in the World to Bring Glory to God, But it Failed
}  Israel Became a Nation Hidden, a Treasure Not Being Invested to Produce Fruit for God
}  It Was for Israel’s Sake that God Bought the World (Jn 11:51 & Is 53:8)
}  The Nation Suffered Judgment and Decline, But in God’s Sight it is “hidden” and Will Be Revealed Again in Glory
    }  Problem:
}  While True, This Would Make Israel the Only Object of the Purchase
}  Interpretation #2: The Treasure is All Who by Grace are Saved Through Faith
}  This Includes Israel, the Church & All Who Will Be Saved Till the End of Time
}  Believers Are In the World, But Not Of the World (Eph 3:9)
}  A Hidden Kingdom With a Returning King
}  A King Who Paid the Price for All at Calvary
}  The Kingdom to Be Revealed With its King Present is Yet Future
